Making a Better Fishery Future
ATKINSONS LAGOON (ATKINSONS DAM) FISHING
Stocked Fish
SWFSA stock several native Australian fish species to improve recreational fishing.
These are:
- Saratoga
- Golden Perch
- Silver Perch
- Australian Bass
- Mary River Cod may be stocked here but at time of writting, none have been released as yet.
Other Native Fish
In Lake Atkinson there are naturally reproducing populations of:
- Spangled Perch
- Eel Tailed Catfish (Tandan)
- Snub Nosed Gar
- Long Fin Eel
Illegally Introduced Native Fish
Some years ago Barred Grunter were illegally released into Atkinsons Lagoon. While these are a native fish, they are not endemic to the Brisbane River catchment and are not a desiable recreational fish. Please destroy any that are caught.
Sleepy Cod have recently been discovered close by in Lake Wivenhoe & the Brisbane River. While these are an Australian fish, they are not endemic to SE Qld waterways and should not be translocated. Please destroy any that are caught.
Pest / Noxious Fish
Tilapia & Pearl Cichlids have been illegally released into many SE Qld waterways. If you catch one of these noxious pests it is illegal to return them to the water.
Please dispose of them in bins provided at boat ramp or bury them above the high water mark.
Fishing Permit
A Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIPS) is not currently required for fishing at Atkinsons Lagoon.
Fishing Guide
There are no fishing guides operating on Atkinsons Lagoon.
Dam Operations
SEQWater controls dam operations.
Atkinsons Lagoon aka Atkinsons Dam is a popular recreational destination.
The popularity is due to several reasons:
- Has boating access with no restrictions on engine or speed
- Open 24/7
- Great facilities eg BBQs, Toilets, Tables etc
- close proximity to the major SE Qld population base
- All weather concrete boat ramp
- 2 x Tourist Parks on the shoreline.
